Summary:
A PR view of Toyota’s recall by Jonathan Hemus. Toyota had to recall cars because of a flaw in the production. Despite all the actions taken after the crisis erupted by Toyota, its reputation has been heavily damaged. More measures should have been taken before the crisis escalated.

This crisis strikes Toyota at its essence of their reputation. Research shows that a crisis striking a company at their essence can deal the most damage.
Two main reasons are given for why the crisis escalated. Firstly an obsession with quality which have lead to denial with quality problems. Secondly a hierarchical approach to management and a lack of open communication. New employees are unable to report flaws in the system. This way problems go unnoticed and don’t get solved. In the end this leads to a major crisis.
It’s very important to train people on forehand to speak in public and deal with the media. Body language is important when having a press conference. Struggling with words is the last thing you want to do.
